This month, Selwyn M. Vickers Endowed Scholar and Vice Chair of Health Services Research Daniel Chu, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, was featured in the SeamlessMD podcast episode, “Leveraging Digital Patient Engagement for ERAS & Health Literacy Strategies.”
Chu sits down with Joshua Liu, M.D., co-founder & CEO at SeamlessMD, and marketing colleague, Alan Sardana to talk about the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) model and how patient engagement technology is beneficial to ERAS.
Chu noted that UAB patients using SeamlessMD accrued $1,386 less in care costs than patients without the technology. He also discussed his attribution of the cost savings to reductions in length of stay during a patient’s initial stay as well as reduced stay post-op 30 days if the patient was readmitted.
In 2018, UAB Medicine and SeamlessMD established a partnership to provide patients with a digital experience through which they can access information about their surgeries–from surgery preparation to the recovery process. The goal of the platform is to improve patients’ surgical outcomes by being able to monitor patients’ symptoms, pain scores and photos after their discharge from the hospital.
