Dr. Brenessa LindemanAssociate Professor and Chief of the Section of Endocrine Surgery Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., MEHP, FACS, has been elected as the national Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) Secretary.

The AAS– a widely-recognized, inclusive surgical organization– was founded in 1966 and has grown significantly over the years being with over 4,000 members. Lindeman is honored to represent UAB Surgery on this national stage.

“I am thrilled to have been elected by my peers and colleagues across the nation to the office of secretary of AAS,” said Lindeman. “I am ready to work alongside the entire executive board to propel the AAS forward in its mission to inspire and develop young academic surgeons.”

Lindeman has long supported educational efforts across the UAB Department of Surgery as well as the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. She acts as the program director of the Endocrine Surgery Fellowship, and she is the chief wellness officer for the department, leading faculty, staff, and trainee wellness initiatives across the department.

Just last year, Lindeman was named assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education at UAB. In this role, Lindeman has oversight for compliance with ACGME requirements and ensures trainees have a high-quality training environment.

In her role with the AAS, Lindeman will keep an accurate record of the proceedings of all scientific and business meetings of the association, as well as preparing agendas for executive council and other business meetings. She will also manage correspondence and be a member of the nominating Committee and awards/fellowship committees, among other duties.

Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, is delighted to see Lindeman take on this role.

“Brenessa has done a wonderful job championing young surgeons here at UAB, and I know she will succeed at the national level as well,” said Chen. “I look forward to watching her excel in the secretary role with the association.”
