PGY2 General Surgery Resident Hannah Ficarino, M.D., has been awarded an American College of Surgeons (ACS) 2022-2024 Resident Research Scholarship award.
Ficarino one was of only six total residents selected for the scholarship, which is a two-year cycle. In the past three years, beginning in 2019, UAB Surgery has had a resident represented in every cycle, including Cozette Killian, M.D., MPH, Connie Shao, M.D., and most recently, Buke Smith, M.D.
The scholarship, offering $30,000 per year, supports Ficarino’s research and may be used for salary or stipend, research materials and travel related to her research. As a scholar, Ficarino will attend the 2023 ACS Clinical Congress to submit a report on the research as part of the Scientific Forum, and to receive a certificate at the annual meeting of the Scholarships Committee.
The ACS states that the six resident research scholarships are supported by the generosity of Fellows, Chapters and friends of the College, to encourage residents to pursue careers in academic surgery. Ficarino is delighted to represent the UAB General Surgery Residency program among those selected by the ACS for the scholarship.
“I am thoroughly looking forward to my resident research time here at UAB Surgery,” said Ficarino. “This funding allows me to pursue impactful research while supporting our clinical mission to improve patient experiences and outcomes.”
