UAB General Surgery Resident, Marvi Tariq, M.D., was recently awarded the Association for Academic Surgery Outstanding Resident Research Award in the category of Clinical Outcomes at the 2022 Academic Surgical Congress.
The award was awarded for her research on the “Association of An Enhanced Recovery Program with Length of Stay After Lower Extremity Bypass". This research showed a significant decrease in total and postoperative length of stay after lower extremity bypass for patients on the ERAS pathway.
This AAS award recognizes outstanding research efforts by medical students and trainees, and supports their interest in pursuing careers in academic surgery.
AAS awardees, like Tariq, receive an award certificate and recognition in the program of the Annual Academic Surgical Congress Meeting. Only 3 total awards (clinical outcomes, basic science and education) are awarded for outstanding resident research every year. As one of the three awardees, Tariq received a $500 travel stipend to offset her attendance at the Academic Surgical Congress.
Tariq was pleased to represent UAB Surgery at ASC and looks forward to participating in future conferences.
“ASC is my favorite research conference to present at, largely due to the clear emphasis on trainee support, education and mentorship. Additionally, being at a supportive program like UAB where your research focus, regardless of what it may be, is unconditionally encouraged makes all the difference. I am so excited to continue working with my mentor Dr. Adam Beck on this highly impactful project. UAB Vascular Surgery Division is one of the first in the country to implement an ERAS pathway for vascular surgery patients, and the AAS has recognized its impact and importance through this award." said Tariq. "Drs. Herb Chen and Britney Corey leave no stone unturned in supporting resident academic development and it shows."
