This year, the 17th Academic Surgical Congress (ASC) marked a return to an in-person meeting for attendees, vaccinated and masked, to join the congress from across the U.S.
Surgeons, in all walks of their careers, convened to discuss their research, pressing findings, and the future directions of academic surgery. Several faculty, staff, and trainees– including medical students, residents, and fellows– attended the meeting. They particiapted in research presentations, keynote sessions, receptions, and competitions.
Of the notable competitions were Surgical Jeopardy and a robot simulation. UAB General Surgery Residents Kelsey Montgomery, M.D., and Mary Smithson, M.D., took home first on behalf of UAB Surgery in Surgical Jeopardy. Additionally, residents Peter Abraham, M.D., and Ron Wang, M.D., secured first place in the robot simulation.
UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine medical student Colin Quinn, who is a member of the Beierle Lab, was awarded the Medical Student Quick Shot award for his research.
Altogether, UAB Surgery was able to claim first place for the amount of abstracts submitted by any other institution in the nation. Another highlight of the meeting was a keynote address delivered by Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, "Reflecting on the Journey: Academic Surgery."
