Chief of Endocrine Surgery and Associate Professor Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., MEHP, FACS, sat down with the Birmingham Mom Collective, an online publishing platform, to discuss thyroid health to mark the awareness month.
As a surgical educator, Lindeman has done extensive research on thyroid health, including parathyroid disease, benign thyroid disease, hyperparathyroidism, adrenal disease and surgical treatment of inherited endocrine syndromes.
At UAB, Lindeman also serves as chief wellness officer in the Department of Surgery, program director of the UAB Endocrine Surgery Fellowship, and assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education. She trains future surgeon scientists on all endocrine surgery topics, including thyroid health and disease.
Lindeman was asked a series of questions from Birmingham Mom Collective contributor and former patient Leah Eagle. In September 2021, Eagle underwent a thyroidectomy. Through Eagle’s questions, Lindeman shared about thyroid issues that women should be on the lookout for, as these disorders are more common among this population.
Lindeman went over different treatment options and approaches for various thyroid diseases, including when surgery may be necessary and what to expect from recovery, and she also previewed cutting-edge treatment options being offered at UAB.
