Dr. Daniel ChuSelwyn M. Vickers Endowed Scholar and Vice Chair of Health Services Research Daniel Chu, M.D., FACS, FASCRS has been awarded the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine Professional Excellence Award. He is one of only three recipients for this prestigious award.

These highly competitive awards highlight the accomplishments who are part of the African-African Faculty Association, the Hispanic/Latin American Faculty Association, and the Asian-American Faculty Association. Chu’s diligent work in research, teaching, and service made him the clear choice for the award.

To be nominated, faculty members must be a member of one of the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion's Faculty Associations (Hispanic and Latin American, Black/African American, and Asian-American/Pacific Islander) and demonstrate career excellence in the areas of research, teaching, and service.

Chu is principal investigator of a K23 award from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and co-PI with Professor Maria Pisu, Ph.D., of a recent R01 award also from the NIMHD. Additionally, he demonstrates a strong aptitude for teaching and mentoring as evidenced by receipt of the UAB Surgery 2019 Medical Student Teaching Award and the 2016 Marshall M. Urist Junior Faculty Teacher of the Year.
