Department of Surgery Professor and Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Colin Martin, M.D., FACS, was elected chair of the Society of University Surgeons Membership Committee.

As chair of the committee, Martin will work in conjunction with the SUS Member Services Department, as the lead for the new member recruitment and application process.

The SUS also notes that Martin will serve on the SUS Executive Council and will be responsible for submitting a written report to the Council during the February and Fall Council meetings, and giving an oral report to the members at the SUS Business Meeting at the Academic Surgical Congress.

Martin is delighted to represent UAB Surgery in this national leadership position.

“It’s an honor to have been elected by my colleagues, across the nation, to this role,” said Martin. “I look forward to prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the society’s membership process while furthering the mission of the entire organization.”

The mission of the SUS is to support and advance leaders in academic surgery. The education and training of surgeons has always been central to the mission of the SUS, which was founded in 1938.
