Department of Surgery Professor and Vice Chair of Basic Research James Bibb, Ph.D., will join the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Member of the Molecular Neurogenetics Study Section (MNG), Emerging Technologies and Training Neurosciences Integrated Review Group (ETTN).
Bibb was invited by Lawrence A. Tabak, D.D.S., Ph.D., acting director of the NIH, to join the prestigious group, which sits within the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) at the NIH. Bibb will serve a four-year term, beginning in July of this year.
The MNG study section reviews NIH grant applications that utilize or develop molecular genetic approaches where the context of neuroscience is essential to the application. This includes new genetic tools and emerging genetic methods in various model systems.
Membership, like Bibb’s, represents a major commitment of professional time and energy as well as a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort.
In his new, national role, Bibb will review applications submitted to NIH, make recommendations on the applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
“These functions are of great value to the medical and allied research field, and I am honored to have been selected and entrusted to uphold the mission of the National Institutes of Health,” said Bibb. “I look forward to representing the values of research that we uphold here in my own lab, as well as the department, on a national level.”
Nominations to NIH Study Sections are based on demonstrated competence and achievement of the nominee to scientific discipline as evidenced by quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements, and honors.
