UAB Medical Student Meghna Katta was selected by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) as a recipient of the 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Award.
Award recipients were chosen based on their demonstrated interest in a career in surgery and identification as part of a group that is underrepresented in medicine.
Recipients of the DEI Award received a waiver of the registration cost to the Association of Women Surgeons’ conference, which was hosted in San Diego this October.
Katta is a graduate of the Department of Surgery’s T35 STREAMS program, where she conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Chu, Associate Professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
“At UAB, students are incredibly fortunate to have a robust AWS Medical School Chapter with faculty mentorship from Drs. Kristy Broman, Jessica Fazendin, and Kimberly Hendershot,” said Katta. “I am so thankful for the Association’s continued investment in my professional growth. Being able to attend the AWS national conference was such a rewarding experience as I was able to learn from and connect with inspiring leaders and peers from institutions across the world.”
