The UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is offering a Summer Innovation Fellowship Program for 2023.
Through the Summer Innovation Fellowship Program, the department of Biomedical Engineering aims to strengthen and prepare graduates well-versed in life sciences and engineering for the benefit of society.
About the Program
The Summer Innovation Fellowship Program is a student-based clinical innovation ecosystem designed to provide rising juniors from the UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering with an eight-week experience beginning June 1 - July 28, 2023.
Fellows will work on independent research and development projects overseen by faculty members in UAB’s School of Engineering and the UAB Department of Surgery, along with various clinicians, medical students and residents at UAB Hospital.
Projects will be conducted in the general field of biomedical engineering product development with an emphasis on improving outcomes for hospitalized patients and patients in rehabilitation.
Application Process
Students who will be BME juniors in the fall of 2023 are eligible to apply. Applications should be taking BME 300-level courses in the fall semester, but not be enrolled in BME 498 Senior Design I.
Applicants should submit the following:
• Resume (2-page maximum)
• Personal Statement (must include general interests, objectives for the summer, background and preparation; one-page maximum)
• Unofficial Transcript
• Two References (at least one of these must be from a faculty member at the student’s current institution)
• An Itemized Budget for Living Expenses

Presidential Summer Innovation Fellowships
Recipients of the Presidential Summer Innovation Fellowship are expected to invest a minimum of 30 hours per week in performing background research, engaging in design and prototyping, and interacting extensively with clinicians at UAB Hospital and potential project mentors.
Participating students are unallowed for outside employment for the duration of the fellowship.
