Division of Pediatric Surgery Associate Professor and Children’s of Alabama Trauma Program Director Robert Russell, M.D., MPH, recently served as the guest editor for the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery January supplement on pediatric hemorrhagic shock.
The supplement contains published papers from the Pediatric Traumatic Hemorrhagic Shock Consensus Conference.
A panel of 16 consensus multidisciplinary committee members evaluated literature on six topics concerning trauma as the leading cause of pediatric mortality rates. The supplement includes two clinical recommendations, 14 expert consensus statements, and five good practice statements.
In order to combat a lack of literature on pediatric trauma, the Pediatric Traumatic Shock Consensus has worked to empower pediatric trauma providers with the latest evidence and guidance to inform their practice.
Dr. Russell obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, completed his residency in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University.
His clinical interests include minimally invasive pediatric surgery, trauma and neonatal surgery. His research focuses on mechanisms and translational questions regarding acute traumatic coagulopathy in the pediatric trauma population and quality improvement and clinical outcomes in pediatric surgery.
