UAB Department of Surgery Division of Transplantation Assistant Professor and Liver Transplant Program Surgical Director Robert Cannon, M.D., FACS, has been selected as a Pittman Scholar in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine.
Dr. Cannon received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 2008, then completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Louisville in 2015. He graduated from UAB’s abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgery fellowship in 2017.
He served as an assistant professor at the University of Louisville Division of Transplantation before joining the faculty at the UAB Department of Surgery.
Among his clinical interests are: liver transplantation, minimally invasive hepatic surgery, surgical management of portal hypertension, polycystic liver disease, and benign and malignant hepatobiliary tumors.
Dr. Cannon will receive the equivalent of a spendable income of $12,000 each year for three years. His funding can be used towards his research endeavors or scholarly enrichment.

1. Maintain NIH funding
2. Increase extramural funding portfolio
3. Enhance collaborative interactions
4. Continue to publish high-impact papers.
