The UAB Department of Surgery is honored to welcome Mary McDougal as Executive Administrator.

In her role, McDougal will serve as the primary departmental representative to outside agencies, while coordinating all managerial functions of the department and its 650 faculty and staff.

McDougal has previously served as the executive administrator for the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for the last three years, where she was responsible for over 130 staff and faculty members.

“The role of executive administrator requires a range of diverse leadership experiences, and Mary’s dynamic skillset and commitment to continuous improvement make her a great addition to our team,” says Department of Surgery Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS.

McDougal is active in the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) national committee, serving as vice president and president-elect of the AAP Administrative Directors Counsel.

Before relocating to Birmingham, McDougal served as the Director of Finance for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Administrator of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at VCU Health.

She obtained her undergraduate degree in political science from Virginia Polytechnic University and her Master of Public Administration from Seattle University.

When not at work, McDougal enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her daughter, Seraphina, aged 9.
