General Surgery Chief Resident Ahmer Irfan, MBChB, and Research Resident Katherine McElroy, M.D., have been selected as recipients of the 2023 American College of Surgeons (ACS) Leadership and Advocacy Summit Resident Travel Award.
Dr. Irfan is a PGY5 UAB General Surgery Resident and an alumnus of Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
Dr. McElroy is a Research Resident and an alumna of both McGovern Medical School and Rice University in Houston, Texas.
“It is an honor to be selected for this prestigious award. I look forward to representing the Department of Surgery at the Leadership and Advocacy Summit this year,” says Irfan.
As recipients, Drs. Irfan and McElroy will attend the annual Leadership and Advocacy Summit from April 15-18 in Washington, D.C.
The Summit offers leaders and advocates specialized educational sessions on effective leadership in surgery, interactive advocacy training, and visits to ACS Congressional Offices.
