UAB Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Associate Professor and Section of Endocrine Surgery Chief Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., MEHP, FACS, has been named a member of the Macy Faculty Scholars Class of 2023.
Dr. Lindeman received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University. She completed her residency in general surgery at Johns Hopkins University and a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
As a distinguished surgical educator, she earned a Master of Education in Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University. She is a Councilor for the American Board of Surgery, for whom she has led several aspects of the move toward competency-based assessment using Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and serves as a Director of the General Surgery Board.
She is also the current Secretary for the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), sits on various committees for the Association for Surgical Education (ASE), and is an Associate Member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Lindeman’s areas of interest include competency-based assessment, trainee supervision and autonomy, the clinical learning environment, and endocrine surgical disease including thyrotoxicosis and outpatient adrenalectomy.
“It is my true honor to represent the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and the Department of Surgery as part of the Macy Faculty Scholars Program. As one of few surgeons to ever take part in the program, I am excited to embark on this journey to improve surgical education and training in the United States and beyond,” says Dr. Lindeman.

The Macy Faculty Scholars Program seeks to identify and nurture future educators in medicine and nursing.
A Macy Faculty Scholar receives salary support of $100,000 per year over two years for the purpose of developing an educational project in their institution and taking part in career development activities.
