UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine student Karleigh J. Maze won first in podium presentations at the Medical Association of the State of Alabama’s 2023 Research Symposium.
Maze presented a project with Associate Division Director of GI Surgery Dr. Daniel Chu‘s research lab, concerning ChatGPT’s ability to improve the readability of patient educational materials.
This project involved taking patient educational materials downloaded from UAB’s electronic medical records (EMR) and inserting them in ChatGPT with multiple prompts, transforming the document to be easily read by a general audience with non-medical experience.
“I am incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful support and mentorship as a part of Dr. Chu’s lab and within the School of Medicine. I am honored to win this award and excited to continue sharing our work on ChatGPT,” said Maze.
Maze is a third-year medical student at UAB with plans to apply to UAB’s General Surgery Residency Program this year. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science from The University of Alabama and a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Cincinnati.
She is passionate about general surgery, medical education, clinical research, and mentoring.
