Several members of the Department of Surgery's General Surgery Residency Program were chosen for the distinct honor of serving as UAB Heersink School of Medicine Learning Communities House Staff Mentors for the 2023 - 2024 year.
Selected residents include:

• Dr. Janet Julson
• Dr. Adam Lucy
• Dr. Kelsey Montgomery
• Dr. Wendelyn Oslock
• Dr. Stephanie Rakestraw
• Dr. Angela Sickels
Each mentor will work with a faculty mentor to help guide a small group of Heersink of School of Medicine students in monthly meetings to discuss a variety of professional development and wellness topics in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Optional social events are offered on a routine basis to help build collegiality through peer mentoring.
Medical students are assigned to their learning community based on clinical assignments and remain with the same group for the duration of their time in the program.
"I am exceptionally proud of the residents who were chosen to serve as house staff mentors. They each serve as a fantastic representation of what hard work and dedication can achieve, and I know they will be fantastic guides to medical students as they forge their paths," said General Surgery Residency Program Director Dr. Britney Corey.
