The UAB Division of Surgical Oncology participated in the Steps against Melanoma Walk at Veterans Park on Saturday, May 20, in honor of Melanoma Awareness Month.
Together, participants completed the 5K course to raise money for Aim at Melanoma (AIM), a leading global foundation researching optimal treatments and a cure for melanoma.
“This was a great event for us to come together with our colleagues, patients, and community members to raise awareness and funds to support ongoing research and support for people with melanoma," says Division of Surgical Oncology Assistant Professor and Lead of the UAB O’Neal Skin and Soft Tissue Cancer Management Team Dr. Kristy Broman.
Free visual skin checks were also provided at the event.
About Melanoma
Approximately one in every 50 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma at some point in their lifetime. Over the last 30 years, the rate of melanoma diagnoses has more than doubled.
Your risk for melanoma can be reduced by wearing skin protection and sunscreen, avoiding intentional tanning, and avoiding sunlight during peak hours.
If you notice any change in the shape, color, or size of a mole, make an appointment to see your doctor today.
