The UAB Department of Surgery has added a new lactation room to its facilities, which will be available to all faculty, staff, and trainees.
The space, nestled in the center of Boshell Diabetes Center’s 5th floor, is accessible to all employees and residents at any time and includes a plush recliner, calming sound machine, and on-site refrigeration and cleaning supplies for pumping materials.
Previously housed in the department's wellness suite, the lactation suite has now been expanded into its own private room to include an occupancy lock for privacy.
"We want this space to be a relaxing place for parents to feel empowered to breastfeed and take care of their families," says Administrative Director Marissa Keppley. "The demands of our busy schedules can make pumping seem like an impossibility, and our department wants to make sure that we provide the best resources possible to relieve the stress of finding a comfortable and private lactation space."
