The UAB Department of Surgery, in partnership with a host of generous contributors, has started a new program to help General Surgery Residents begin their careers with the tools they need.
Starting in spring 2024, general surgery PGY-2 residents will receive their first pair of surgical eye loupes, which help magnify small-scale objects in the operating room and reduce headaches and fatigue.
“This is a tool that surgeons use on a daily basis,” says Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair of the Department of Surgery Dr. Herbert Chen. “By providing each resident with their own set of loupes, we hope to eliminate one of the more costly equipment expenses and show our residents that we’re here to support them through the most formative years of their surgical careers.”
“Removing the added expense of surgical loupes is a tremendous advantage. Typically, loupes last for many years and will still be serving our residents well after they complete their training,” says General Surgery Residency Program Director Dr. Britney Corey. “We’re thankful for the support of every donor who has made this initiative possible.”
