Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, the UAB Department of Surgery Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair, and Helen Krontiras, M.D., the director of the Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery were both recognized by the Association of Women Surgeons Foundation.

Chen received the 2023 Association of Women Surgeons Past President Honorary Member Award. The award is given annually to a non-member of the association whose character and accomplishments reflect the mission of the AWS Foundation and whose support has contributed to the advancement of women in surgery.

As the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Surgery, Chen has featured manuscripts by AWS members in an issue of the journal annually.

Krontiras received the 2023 Dr. Sally Abston Association of Women Surgeons Distinguished Member Award. The award is presented every year to an AWS member who, in addition to possessing nationally recognized clinical expertise, is an exemplary mentor and role model to other women surgeons.

Krontiras is the Director of Clinical Affairs for the O'Neal Cancer Service Line at UAB and has collaborated with breast cancer fundraising organizations across the state. She is nationally recognized for her work as an educator, researcher, and advocate for women’s breast cancer prevention.

 Chen and Krontiras will be honored at the AWS Foundation Awards Dinner and Gala at the association’s annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 23.
