Kristapher Gulley, MSCJ, a 4th-year medical student in the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, recently took the stage as the presenting author at the 2023 Drew Walker Research Symposium.
In the presentation of his research, Gulley discussed how our surroundings impact what we eat and affect our well-being. Through analysis, he discovered a strong connection between the food environment index and the dietary choices of undergraduate students. The food environment index considers factors such as access to grocery stores, availability of healthy food options, and the presence of fast-food outlets in a given area.
This research sheds light on the importance of creating a supportive food environment for students. By improving access to nutritious options and promoting healthy eating habits, educational institutions can positively influence the well-being of their students.
Gulley’s work not only highlights the impact of the food environment on gut health and dietary choices, but also provides valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and educators. It serves as a call to action to prioritize the creation of healthier food environments to support the overall well-being of students for their long-term health.
