Several members of the UAB Department of Surgery were conferred as fellows of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) at this year’s clinical congress in Boston, Massachusetts.
The following members of the department were recognized in the proceedings:
- UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Assistant Professor Drew J. Gunnells, Jr., M.D.
- UAB Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery Assistant Professor Mohammad Zain Ghani Hashmi, M.D.
- UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Assistant Professor Robert Hayne Hollis, M.D., MSPH
- UAB Division of Breast & Endocrine Surgery Clinical Assistant Professor Katelin Holmes, D.O.
- UAB Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery Assistant Professor Nathan Manley, M.D., M.S., MPH
- UAB Division of Transplantation Assistant Professor Saulat Sajjad Sheikh, MBBS

The FACS designation (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon’s name means that a surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have undergone a rigorous evaluation and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the ACS.
