The UAB Department of Surgery’s communication team was recognized at the inaugural UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Excellence in Communications Awards.
With over 80 submissions from across the School of Medicine for work completed in 2023, the Department of Surgery earned awards in three major categories:
- Best of Videos: Marissa Keppley for “The Future of UAB Surgery” (Additional collaborators for the video included videographer Chris Carmichael and project manager Emme Stewart.)
- People’s Choice Award: Allie Hulcher for the Compassion Closet public relations campaign
- Best of Articles: Emme Stewart for “A team with heart: Patient recounts journey through multiple aortic repairs with UAB’s Cardiovascular Institute”
“Our communications team is instrumental in connecting the wonderful work our clinical and research teams do to the community around us,” says Executive Administrator Mary McDougal, MPA. “Their diligent work and enthusiasm in cultivating captivating stories that encapsulate the novel findings and life-changing treatments happening daily at UAB is a critical asset to our overall operations.”
In the last year, the UAB Surgery communications team featured over 150 stories with press mentions in outlets including The New York Times, Scientific American, AL.com, and more. Their online presence and news articles have garnered an average of 39,000+ views monthly.
