Dr. Kimberly KopeckyUAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Kimberly Kopecky, M.D., MSCI, has been nominated as an official UAB Center of Palliative and Supportive Care (CPSC) Scholar member.

Kopecky received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed surgical training at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. She joined UAB as a faculty member in 2024 as a specialist in peritoneal surface malignancies and delivery of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). She provides patient care for a variety of diagnoses and conducts surgeries for gastric, appendiceal, colorectal, small bowel, and peritoneal cancer.

Kopecky has been dedicated to providing a patient-centered and multidisciplinary approach to care for her patients, including both surgical and palliative therapy. Her primary objective is to enhance patients’ quality of life by creating a care plan that includes surgical and non-surgical methodologies for treatment. Kopecky utilizes various resources with a goal of optimizing patient outcomes including chemotherapy, nutrition support, physical therapy, social and psychological support as well as multimodal pain management to relieve discomfort.

"Surgical oncology is about advocating for patients, helping them make decisions, and building supportive relationships with them and their families as they navigate a cancer diagnosis," says Kopecky. "I am proud to become a member of CPSC and collaborate with our palliative and supportive care colleagues both in research and clinical care."
