Dr. Sanjana BalachandraUAB Department of Surgery Post-Doctoral Researcher Sanjana Balachandra, M.D., has been selected for a travel award from the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) for her project entitled "Hypercalcemic patients have a lesser risk for psychiatric complications after parathyroidectomy."

Balachandra obtained her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas and her general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate in New York. After completing her first two years of residency, she began her role as an endocrine surgery researcher at UAB.

UAB Department of Surgery Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair of Surgery Herbert Chen, M.D., mentors Balachandra's projects in endocrine surgery. Her topics of interest are thyroid and parathyroid disorders. She currently receives funding through a National Institute of Health T32 grant for graduate research programs.

About IAES and the IAES Travel Award

The International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) is a specialized group within the International Society of Surgery (ISS) for general surgeons interested in the endocrine system. The IAES Travel Award is a contribution of up to $500 to fund residents, students, or fellows' travel to the IAES conference. This year, the conference will be held on August 25-29, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
