Mallory Perez, M.D., a general surgery resident at UAB, has been awarded the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) 2024 M. Judah Folkman Award in Clinical Science.
Perez finished her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned her medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Currently, Perez is a pediatric surgery research fellow at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, funded by a National Cancer Institute (NCI) T32 training grant through Northwestern University. Her current research endeavors focus on opioid stewardship as well as perioperative enhanced recovery protocol development and implementation, including for pediatric patients with cancer. As a result of the research she presented at APSA, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program – Pediatric (NSQIP-P) has begun collecting detailed opioid prescribing data for over 180 participating hospitals.
"Dr. Perez's current award is a reflection of her unwavering dedication to becoming an excellent pediatric surgeon and promoting advancements in the field," says Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, UAB General Surgery Program Director.
