Dr. Maria Helena LimaMaria Helena Lima, M.D., an associate professor of the UAB Division of Plastic Surgery, was recently featured on UAB's MedCast Podcast.

During the episode, Dr. Lima discusses the differences between saline and silicone implants, their potential risks, and the options for patients requiring breast reconstruction.

About Breast Reconstruction

Through the episode, Dr. Lima reviews the three main techniques used in breast surgery procedures: surgery using breast implants, using autologous tissue, and oncoplastic surgery.

Lima explains that patients have the option of saline and silicone implants and notes that many patients are curious about the differences in the two. Dr. Lima adds that saline implants are filled with saline, a fluid that is naturally absorbed in case of rupture. Silicone implants are filled with silicone, which will stay contained within the breast capsule created by the body.

Dr. Lima also speaks about autologous tissue transfer surgery, which utilizes the patient's own tissue. This tissue can be taken from a location close to the wound or from a different location on the body. The veins and arteries of the tissue are cut and reattached close to the breast.

Finally, Lima describes oncoplastic surgery as a technique that involves rearranging tissue when a small breast lump needs to be removed. Tissue rearrangements are made in the operated breast to minimize surface depressions, and the breast on the opposite side of the body is rearranged to maintain both breasts at the same shape and size.
