News Vardas 071524UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Assistant Professor Panayotis Vardas, M.D., recently discussed on UAB MedCast how surgical practices are adapting to the evolving treatment of atrial fibrillation.

In this podcast episode, Vardas discussed the growing significance of atrial fibrillation. About 30-50% of the population who undergoes surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacement has atrial fibrillation. This common arrhythmia affects the heart's rhythm and increases the risk of strokes and other complications.

Vardas emphasized the necessity for surgical teams to stay updated with the latest advancements and methodologies in atrial fibrillation management to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

About Atrial Fibrillation Management

Vardas discussed various strategies for managing atrial fibrillation, such as integrating advanced surgical techniques alongside more traditional approaches: medication and catheter ablation. Specifically, he highlighted left atrial appendix excision or obliteration as options recommended to manage this condition in past guidelines.

Furthermore, Vardas pointed out the significance of surgical ablation. This procedure involves creating scar patterns in the heart tissue to block abnormal electrical signals causing atrial fibrillation, addressing the leading causes of this rhythm disorder.

Innovations at UAB

At UAB, Vardas shared that integrating innovative techniques into surgical practice is a key focus. He stressed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, facilitating collaboration between surgeons and cardiologists to formulate an effective treatment plan tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances.

“Choosing the appropriate management strategy is determined by thoroughly evaluating the patient’s health profile, symptom severity, and other existing health issues. At UAB, we place great importance on understanding our patients thoroughly to provide them with the best possible support for their conditions,” says Vardas.
