Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, professor and chair of the UAB Department of Surgery, presented the 2016 State of the Department at Surgical Grand Rounds on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Chen highlighted the strengths and successes of the department's faculty and outlined his goals for the future. His departmental goals include:

1. Increasing the surgery research portfolio;
2. Enhancing career development opportunities, social networking and social activities for faculty;
3. Driving clinical specialization and expansion.
