More than 60 medical students, residents and faculty members represented the UAB Department of Surgery last week at the 12th Annual Academic Surgical Congress in Las Vegas. Second only to the University of Michigan, the department led the pack in presentations and moderated more than eight sessions.
“UAB medical students and residents did a truly outstanding job presenting their research and represented UAB Surgery incredibly well,” said Daniel Chu, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. “They should all be proud of their poise and presence at this national surgical meeting.”
Presenters talked on an array of topics from burnout among surgical residents and faculty teaching performance to surgical disparities and trauma outcomes. Kevin Cofer, M.D., a second-year medical student who was one of nine UAB speakers to give an oral presentation at the three-day event, spoke on the former and argued that surgical resident burnout was associated with emotional intelligence.
General Surgery Resident Meixi Ma, M.D., discussed resident-driven faculty evaluations of teaching in her oral presentation moderated by Assistant Professor Britney Corey, M.D. General Surgery Research Resident Laura Stafman, M.D., shared her work with Professor Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., on socioeconomic disparities in young women with dysgerminoma, and General Surgery Resident Rindi Uhlich M.D., with mentor Professor Jeff Kerby, M.D., showed how aged blood used in transfusions affects trauma outcomes.
Participants also took to Twitter to share their peers’ work and celebrate their accomplishments using the hashtag #ASC2017. Take a look at our ASC Storify to see what they said.
“UAB was a force at the 2017 ASC,” Chu said. “We were omnipresent in every room and brought great energy to the meeting. UAB Surgery is already looking forward to the 2018 ASC meeting and aims to have even more join us next year.”
