The Department of Surgery welcomes two new faculty this April, Jon William Jones, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., and Zdenek Novak, M.D., Ph.D., M.S.H.I.

Jones comes to the department from Russell Medical Center in Alexander City, Alabama. He completed medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, in 1986 and completed a residency at the University of South Alabama and the University of Minnesota in 1991 and 1992, respectively. Jones completed a fellowship in transplant surgery and immunology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1993. In our department, he will serve as a clinical assistant professor within the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Novak returns to UAB as an instructor in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the UAB Department of Pathology in 2002, serving as a postdoctoral employee in the UAB Department of Pediatrics from 2002-2006 and obtaining a master’s degree in health informatics at UAB in 2010. Novak attended medical school and completed his residency and fellowship in Prague, Czech Republic.
