This year, general surgery residents Matthew Giglia, M.D., and Margaux Mustian, M.D., spent a month in the resident training program at Westmead Hospital in Sydney.

Mustian said she spent her time abroad training in Westmead's transplant division.

"I helped with organ procurements, kidney transplants and dialysis access cases," she said. "I also met with members of the SONG [Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology] Initiative, whose study aims to develop a core outcome set for research trials in kidney transplantation."

Richard Hanney, M.D., a surgeon and professor at Sydney Medical School who coordinated Giglia and Mustian's rotations, praised the duo's work in Australia.

“Matt and Margaux fit in here very quickly,” Hanney said. “They also shared their own clinical perspective, benefitting those with whom they have worked.”
