At this year’s State of the UAB Department of Surgery address, department chair Herbert Chen, M.D., highlighted 2017’s research and clinical successes and encouraged faculty to continue to excel in these areas.

In 2017, Department of Surgery faculty submitted more than 134 grants, and this increase in submissions—up from 72 in 2016—has helped expand the department’s research portfolio. Chen noted that the department’s clinical program continues to be strong and that challenges in the overall field of healthcare will only increase the importance of the Department of Surgery to UAB Medicine as a whole. Chen also specified ways the department and individuals can contribute, including improving patient access by owning clinic templates, augmenting bed capacity by reducing length of stay and utilizing the UAB hotel for appropriate patients, accepting transfers, using the OR more efficiently, and decreasing unnecessary expenses.

Leadership was also an important topic, as Chen stressed his belief that surgeons are natural leaders and reiterated his commitment to helping faculty and residents excel in leadership positions. He highlighted several opportunities for leadership training and announced new resident and faculty leadership programs, including the first UAB Department of Surgery faculty leadership retreat, which will be held August 4 at Willow Point Country Club in Alexander City, Alabama.
