The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) was established in 1987 in particular recognition of the lack of African-Americans in academic surgery and the lack of an organized network for African-American surgeons to promote more active participation and success in academic surgery. Its mission has evolved to support surgeons from all backgrounds. As a result, SBAS members represent a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds.
