Dr. Cox is a graduate of the UAB School of Medicine and completed general surgery and surgical critical care fellowships at UAB before beginning his military service in 2012.

“I am very excited to be returning home to UAB,” Cox said. “My training there in medical school, general surgery residency and trauma/critical care fellowship prepared me well for my time as a deployed trauma surgeon and as the medical director for en route care.”

Cox has completed several military deployments, most notably serving as trauma czar, chief of surgery and surgical services flight commander at Craig Joint Theater Hospital in Bagram, Afghanistan.

“The lessons I learned at UAB prepared me for some challenging and incredible clinical and leadership opportunities during my six years in the Air Force,” Cox said. “I now hope to bring back lessons and perspectives I’ve learned from the military trauma and en route care system to contribute to the continued success of the UAB trauma program.”

Division of Acute Care Surgery Director Jeffrey Kerby, M.D., Ph.D., said he looks forward to seeing Cox in a leadership role at UAB.

“We are excited to have Dr. Cox join our Division of Acute Care Surgery as our trauma medical director,” Kerby said. “Daniel is an excellent clinical acute care surgeon and has a proven track record of leadership over his last six years as an active duty Air Force surgeon. He brings a wealth of knowledge regarding trauma systems of care and educational program design from his current position, and we believe his expertise will greatly enhance our trauma program at UAB.”

Cox is scheduled to start at UAB on July 1.
