The Society of Asian Academic Surgeons provides an annual scholarship to surgical trainees interested in careers in academic surgery. The scholarship will pay for registration for the Association for Academic Surgery’s fall courses, which will be held on October 20, the weekend preceding the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. In addition to registration, the scholarship will cover two nights’ lodging at the meeting hotel and domestic coach airfare with total not to exceed $1,500.
The application deadline is Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, with decisions expected to be made by Aug. 17, 2018.
To qualify, applicants should be surgical residents or fellows in good standing at an approved surgical training program, be of Asian descent (including individuals of East, Southeast and South Asian, Persian, and Arabic descent) and want to pursue a career in academic surgery. Applicants must be a member of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons; if you’re not currently a member, an application form can be completed here at the time of submission of the scholarship application.
Application Requirements:
- A one-page essay detailing personal background, interests in academic surgery and any financial hardship limiting your ability to attend the conference
- A current copy of your CV
- Letters of recommendations from the program director and one additional faculty member at your home institution
Selection will be based upon the individual’s desire and potential for success in academic surgery with considerations given for those applicants who would have financial hardship in attending the conference.
Recipients of the award are appointed to a two-year term as a resident member of the SAAS Scholarships Committee. Check out previous winners of the scholarship here.
