Join UAB’s Institute for Human Rights for a Facebook Live discussion on human rights during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Institute for Human Rights will moderate a community discussion, “Human Rights in Times of COVID-19: Safety vs. Individual Liberty?” at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 21, on its Facebook page.
The discussion will focus on tensions created by the authority of governments to limit individual rights in times of public emergencies, and the implications for human rights, people and policy in the United States and elsewhere.
Featured panelists from the College of Arts and Sciences include:
- Kathryn Morgan, Ph.D., director, African American Studies program
- Robert Blanton, Ph.D., chair, Department of Political Science and Public Administration
- Natasha Zaretsky, Ph.D., professor, Department of History
Panelists will discuss the implications of emergency declarations for human rights and individual freedoms in light of the current pandemic.
