UAB Assistant Professor of Sculpture John Douglas Powers, M.F.A., recently installed the commissioned work “Konza” at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art in Manhattan, Kan. The project was more than a year in the making and was initiated by the chief curator after he saw Powers’ work in a show at La Esquina Gallery in Kansas City, Mo., Powers says.
The aluminum, brass, stainless steel, plastic and electric motor work was inspired by and named after the nearby Konza Prairie, a more than 13 square-mile preserve of native tall grass prairie. The kinetic, or moving, sculpture is now part of the museum’s permanent collection and will be on display through May 2013.
