University of Alabama at Birmingham students selected by UAB visiting artist and juror Jessica Angel will be on display from March 31-April 14, in the 41st annual Juried Student Exhibition.
Works created by 37The exhibition is coordinated by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, and presented in the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts galleries. An opening reception is planned from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 31, with a 7 p.m. awards presentation, in the AEIVA, 1221 10th Ave. South. Before the reception, at 5 p.m., Angel will give a visiting artist lecture. Both events are free and open to the public.
The annual Juried Student Exhibition includes student works selected by a professional artist, says department Chair Lauren Lake, MFA.
“The exhibition functions as an experiential learning and professional practice opportunity for students enrolled in studio art courses across media and stages of development,” Lake said.
Angel selected works that “fit in a dialogue inspired by the structure of networks and the implicit interconnections found within the submissions as a whole.”
Angel, a Colombian artist living and working in New York, is an artist-in-residence with the UAB DAAH and AEIVA. Through the spring of 2017, Angel is working with UAB students to create a large-scale, site-specific installation, “Facing the Hyperstructure.” Angel’s installations aim to enable forms of collaboration among sciences, philosophy, music, art and new media. Angel uses a variety of materials — including cut vinyl, paint and wallpaper — to transform architectural interiors by distorting the viewer’s visual perspective. The opening reception will include a multisensory experience of Angel's installation available only during the opening including lights, music, and video. Warning: the opening night for this exhibition will include loud noise and constant changing lights in brightly colored spaces. Persons with light and noise sensitivity or photosensitive epilepsy should use caution when viewing this exhibition on opening night as some elements could trigger a seizure.
