The Alabama Society of Professional Engineers has named UAB student Amanda Haglund its Student of the Year. UAB students have won this honor every year since 2002.
“Amanda is outstanding and a superb student and we are all proud that she extends a tradition of excellence as the 10th straight UAB student to earn the honor of ASPE student of the year,” says Melinda Lalor, Ph.D., interim dean of the School of Engineering.
The Birmingham native from the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering also was named the School of Engineering’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student Engineer for 2010-11.
Haglund credits her success to her environment. “I was home schooled, and my mom chose a lot of AP courses so I was quite ready to start college. Plus, the School of Engineering has a small-school feel because the professors are very involved,” says Haglund. “I love my teachers, and my department allows any student who wants to gain hands-on experience that opportunity in real-world situations.”
Linda Lucas, Ph.D., the former dean of the School of Engineering and current UAB interim Provost, won this award in 1978.
