Lauren Marshall, a first-year master’s student in the UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a Whitaker International Scholar Summer Grant. The program provides funding for the top 40 bioengineers and biomedical engineers in the United States to further their education overseas. Marshall will spend eight weeks studying in Galway, Ireland.
“I am very excited to work with others, who have a different educational background than myself, and learn how research is done differently outside the United States,” said Marshall.
The goal of Marshall’s research project is to create a human breast cancer tissue mimic to accelerate identification of safe and efficacious breast cancer drug therapies. Her project will span her master’s thesis and her doctoral dissertation. She is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Society and works in the lab of her mentor, Joel Berry.
Marshall is from Huntsville and she is the daughter of Mike and Pam Marshall.
