School of Public HealthDepartment of Health Behavior Associate Professors Susan Davies, Ph.D., and Robin Lanzi, Ph.D., will present “Understanding Maternal Depression,” 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Mountain Brook Board of Education Charles Mason Building, 32 Vine Street.
The workshop, targeted towards physicians, nurses, educators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, daycare workers, ministers and community/neighborhood leaders, will help raise awareness of the effects of depression on women, their children and their communities.
Maternal depression is a significant health issue, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Maternal depression affects children and significant others, and the effects of depression ripple into the community. Davies and Lanzi will talk about individual and community-based interventions to help those affected, and they will provide suggestions for applying this information in community settings.
