The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education recently announced its first class of honors students. All four are undergraduates majoring in exercise science in the Department of Human Studies. They were selected because of outstanding academic achievement. The 2014-15 honorees:
William “Billy” Brown

Plans: To pursue an advanced degree in physical therapy

Research: Collecting anthropometric data of male advanced rock climbers, to specifically measure hand grip strength and power
Civic Engagement: Started a rock climbing club for campus community
Emily Gaddy
Hometown: Birmingham, Ala.
Plans: To pursue a master’s degree in exercise physiology
Graduation: Summer 2014
Research: Studying the relationship between exercise intensity, metabolic rate, insulin sensitivity/cognitive fatigue, and eating behavior
Luke Mahan
Hometown: Birmingham, Ala.
Plans: To pursue an advanced degree in medicine

Research: Isolating the biological and behavioral factors responsible for disparities in the response to a cardiac rehabilitation program in African-American women with heart disease
