Girl Scouts from Oxford, Ala. sew blankets for babies at the UAB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
A Girl Scout troop from Oxford, Alabama, used their sewing class as a service project to make and donate handmade baby quilts to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Women and Infants Center Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Continuing Care Nursery.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, Assistant Nurse Manager Melissa Ohnich will accept the quilts on UAB Hospital’s behalf and speak to the girls about the RNICU and CCN, showing them tiny outfits and diapers for 1- to 2-pound babies, as well as answer any questions they may have.
“Most moms in the NICU and CCN do not have many baby items of their own, because their baby is often born prior to a baby shower,” Ohnich stated. “For some of our families, this is the first blanket received. Having something handmade is special and will mean so much to our patients who receive one. We thank the Girl Scouts for their caring spirit and willingness to take time to work on a project for someone in need.”
The UAB RNICU and CCN provide care for infants with varying diagnoses, including extreme prematurity and cardiac defects, in an environment equipped with the latest patient care technology.
