A one-night-only student art showcase, “Woman Wielding Floss,” will be on exhibition from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, presented by the University of Alabama at BirminghamCollege of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History.
The showcase is in the UAB DAAH Project Space, located on the ground floor of the Humanities Building, 900 13th St. South.
The word embroidery can come with baggage — often invoking images of crocheted tea towels and twee cushion covers, but in recent years a new generation of drawing and textile artists has employed both machine and hand-stitch techniques to challenge these preconceptions. These artists continue to honor traditional methods while combining embroidery with more contemporary mediums to create fresh, original works.
In the UAB Department of Art and Art History’s ARS302 special topics course, “Stitched,” Adjunct Professor Lanette Parker has emphasized contemporary technical, conceptual and creative directions available to students in drawing and stitching through a series of studio and research-based projects. Examples of three of these course projects will be showcased by students Ashlee Boren, Jessie Chatham, Lauren Harbison, Melody Hollenbeck, Amanda Morgado, Chloe Muse, Sav Owen, Stella Polhemus and Savannah Setzer.
