The University of Alabama at Birmingham softball team will host in-state rival Jacksonville State at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, as part of “Donate Life Night at UAB Softball” and National Donate Life Month.
Representatives from the Alabama Organ Center will be on hand to educate those attending on organ donation and help register those who want to be an organ donor. Donor registration is available online now. The event is being held in honor of Birmingham native Tonya Jackson, who died this past fall waiting for a transplant.
More than 122,000 men, women and children are currently awaiting lifesaving organ transplants. More than 1,000 of those are 10 years old or younger. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 patients began new lives in 2015 thanks to organ transplants. Of those, 8,500 came from deceased donors and 6,000 came from living donors.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for “Donate Life Night at UAB Softball.” Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Children 5 and under are admitted free. UAB faculty and staff are eligible to buy one ticket and get one free with their OneCard.
