From left: Brooke Cherven, Kwai Mung Chin and Anna EvansThree University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing graduate students have received scholarships from the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation to further their nursing educations in an effort to transform cancer care for patients throughout their lifespan.
Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing student Brooke Cherven, MPH, received the ONS Foundation 2017 Research Doctoral Scholarship. This scholarship is the highest academic honor awarded annually by the supporting arm of the ONS to students committed to promoting excellence in oncology nursing and the transformation of cancer care.
Cherven is one of the school’s five Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars and received a one-year, $7,500 award to support her research in pediatric oncology and the health and quality of life of childhood cancer survivors.
Cherven has 15 years of experience as a pediatric oncology nurse with a focus on survivors of childhood cancer, and was selected to the 2016 cohort of RWJF Scholars. She is one of 160 nurses nationwide receiving RWJF’s support to pursue their Ph.D.s.
Doctor of Nursing Practice student Anna Evans, R.N., received a one-year, $7,500 ONS Foundation Clinical Doctoral Scholarship. Evans is a distance-accessible student from Glendale, California, and serves as a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Kwai Mung Chin, R.N., a student in the Master of Science in Nursing Primary Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Specialty Track with an oncology subspecialty, received a one-year, $5,000 ONS Foundation Masters Scholarship. Chin is a distance-accessible student from Boonville, Missouri, and is a nurse in the infusion room at Missouri Cancer Associates in Columbia, Missouri.
The ONS Foundation awarded a total of 42 scholarships for 2017-18.
“I am thrilled that our UAB School of Nursing students were among those who received consideration in what was a very rigorous selection process, and were ultimately awarded these prestigious scholarships,” said Associate Professor Deborah Kirk Walker, DNP, the ONS Foundation’s immediate past president. “It is rewarding to see all these students, many of whom are already oncology nurses, receive financial support from the ONS Foundation to further their educations with a more specialized focus in oncology.”
