Birmingham Poetry Review has been nominated for the 2018 Small Press Publisher Award by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. The AWP is the main governing body of creative writing programs nationwide.
BPR is a publication that shares original poetry, translations and reviews. It was founded in 1987 and continues to publish the works of nationally recognized poets such as Betty Adcock, Erica Dawson, Sidney Wade and Mark Jarman.
Adam Vines, editor-in-chief of BPR, was honored to learn of the nomination. “The staff and editors at BPR were absolutely thrilled when we received the news that the journal was nominated for AWP's Small Press Publisher Award,” Vines said. “Winning the award, or being chosen as a finalist, would really place BPR firmly on the national stage.”
The award recognizes the creativity, hard work and innovation of presses and journals. It includes a $2,000 honorarium and a complimentary exhibit booth at the AWP Conference and Bookfair. To qualify for the award, publications must submit a letter of nomination that explains how the press has contributed to the literary landscape and demonstrated commitment to nurturing authors.
The AWP conference committee will choose five finalists from among the nominees in November. The winner will be chosen at AWP’s Opening Night reception at the conference in March. The complimentary booth will be given to the winner at the conference in the following year.
